Ink Adhesion Testing

Ink Adhesion Testing

An ink adhesion test is a method used to determine how well ink adheres to a substrate, such as paper, cardboard, plastic, or metal.

Methods of Ink Adhesion Testing:

1. Tape Test
  • Procedure: A standardized adhesive tape (commonly Scotch tape) is applied over an inked area and then swiftly removed.
  • Result Interpretation: The amount of ink transferred onto the tape indicates the ink's adhesion to the substrate. The less ink transferred, the better the adhesion.
2. Nail Test
  • Procedure: Using your fingernail or a coin, apply moderate pressure and try to scratch the surface of the ink.
  • Result Interpretation: The degree of ink removal or smudging determines the ink’s adhesion. Lower ink transfer signifies better adhesion.
3. Cross-Hatch Test
  • Procedure: A grid pattern is scratched into the inked surface with a sharp instrument, and then adhesive tape is applied and removed.
  • Result Interpretation: The percentage of area where the ink remains intact after tape removal indicates adhesion quality.
